The Broken

White with pride
And arrogance
Building high
A narrow fence
White eyes don’t see.

Lust of green
Sure of station
Blood and death
A red nation
White eyes don’t see.

Holocaust
The gas and grim
Peal of faith
Smoke is the scrim
White eyes don’t see.

Apartheid
To corner them
Keep them poor
Let’s sing  a hymn
White eyes don’t see.

Slavery
Call to shackles
Beauty bound
Power cackles
White eyes don’t see.

Liberty
It was the call
One God Love
Created all
White eyes don’t see.

Equality
Law of the land
Color blind
Slight of the hand
White eyes don’t see.

Policing town
At crime we’ll bark
Keep us safe
From shadows dark
White eyes don’t see.

Suspicion
Covering hues
Richer tone
The land imbues
White eyes don’t see.

Feeling fear
Of light and dark
Keep them down
Difference stark
White eyes don’t see.

Power grabs
No one is spared
Breaking both
Would that we cared
White eyes don’t see.

God of Love
To all I’ll reach
Death by cross
This gap to breach.
White eyes don’t see.

White is me.
